Hix S-650 Auto Open Heat Press 16" x 20"
Professional 16" x 20" semi-automatic clamshell heat press featuring mechanical auto-open operation, full-color LCD touchscreen controls, programmable presets, digital pressure display, floating lower platen, and rugged all-metal construction.
Characteristics
The HIX S-650 Auto Open Heat Press is a professional 16" x 20" semi-automatic clamshell heat transfer press engineered for decorators who need dependable heat, consistent pressure, and improved production efficiency without requiring an air compressor.
Built on HIX's proven clamshell heat press platform, the S-650 combines manual closing with an electronically activated mechanical auto-open system. Once the programmed pressing time has elapsed, the latch releases and a gas-shock-assisted mechanism raises the upper platen automatically. This eliminates the need for the operator to manually open the press at the end of every cycle.
The auto-open design helps reduce operator fatigue during repetitive production while also reducing the possibility of garments or transfers being overheated if an operator becomes occupied with another task. This is especially beneficial for applications requiring longer dwell times, including certain sublimation and specialty heat-transfer processes.
A large 16" x 20" heat platen provides ample working area for T-shirts, sweatshirts, heat transfer vinyl, DTF transfers, sublimation applications, transfer papers, DTG curing, and many other compatible flat heat-transfer applications.
The S-650 features an integrated full-color LCD touchscreen controller that provides convenient control over time and temperature. Operators can save up to four commonly used production presets, allowing frequently used transfer settings to be recalled quickly when changing between applications.
Pressure information is displayed through the touchscreen each time the press is closed, helping operators establish repeatable pressure settings for different transfer materials and garments.
At the heart of the press is HIX's aluminum heat casting, manufactured in-house from an exclusive aluminum alloy engineered to maximize heat transfer. The heavy-duty heating system is designed to provide dependable, uniform heat across the platen for consistent transfer results throughout production.
A floating lower platen helps equalize pressure from edge to edge and allows the press to accommodate substrates of varying thickness. The S-650 can handle compatible substrates up to approximately 1/2" thick, expanding its usefulness beyond standard apparel applications.
HIX's 4" x 5" top pressure plate design distributes closing force across a larger area of the upper platen rather than concentrating pressure through a single attachment point. This design helps provide more consistent pressure toward the outer edges of the platen.
The spring-assisted handle incorporates a full range of pressure adjustment and is designed to make closing the press easier while providing substantial pressure when required.
Heavy-duty all-metal construction makes the S-650 suitable for demanding professional decorating environments. Its clamshell configuration also provides a relatively compact footprint while maintaining a large opening for convenient garment loading.
The S-650 operates without compressed air, making it an excellent option for shops that want many of the workflow advantages of an automatic-opening press without installing or maintaining a separate air compressor.

- Confirm that the press voltage matches the electrical supply before installation.
- HIX recommends installing the press with appropriate surge protection and operating it in a climate-controlled environment.
- Allow the upper platen to reach the required application temperature before beginning production.
- Set the required temperature and pressing time using the LCD touchscreen controller.
- Save frequently used transfer settings as presets to speed up production changeovers.
- Adjust pressure according to the requirements of the transfer material and substrate.
- Perform a test application when working with a new garment, transfer material, or substrate.
- Position the garment smoothly on the lower platen and remove wrinkles from the transfer area.
- Close the press manually to begin the pressing cycle.
- Allow the auto-open mechanism to release and raise the upper platen when the programmed cycle is complete.
- Do not interfere with or obstruct the upper platen while the automatic opening mechanism is operating.
- Use the pressure display to help reproduce established production settings.
- When pressing thicker substrates, verify that pressure remains even across the entire transfer area.
- Follow the transfer manufacturer's recommended time, temperature, pressure, and peel instructions.
- Keep the heat platen clean and free from adhesive, ink, transfer residue, and other contaminants.
